Budget Wine of the Week: Cupcake Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
Friday
Jun 25, 2010
Price: $8
Sweet to Dry Scale: 7-8*
This week, I went with eye candy. This brand has been displayed at my local grocery store for a while, and I have been resisting the urge. I finally gave in, and I think it was pretty good. It’s very dry, and I had been eating grapes before I took my first sip, which was a mistake. The sweetness of the grapes completely overpowered the wine and made it taste extremely bitter. The lesson learned is that this wine does not do well with something sweet paired with it, though I suspect it would be fabulous with dark or bitter chocolate. The wine developed more of a sweetness the next day without too much of a vinegar taste, so it was nice to drink two days in a row!
Bang for your Buck: Decent. It’s a good taste for the price.
*The Sweet to Dry Scale tells you just how dry the wine is, based on a number that my husband and I agree on. The higher the number, the dryer the wine. (0=sweet, 10=dry) My husband likes wines that are a 9 or 10. I like wines that are a 5 or 6.

For the price, this is one of the nicest cabs. I have found. My mission? To find the best of the best in the $10 to $15 range. Found this one on sale for $9. Score! Dry yes, but not bitter, I call it a grown-up taste. And it does indeed go well with dark chocolate. But then, doesn’t everthing? Here’s to expensive taste and cheap wine! Cheers!

Amy, I’ve been reading your reviews on Facebook. Who is your target audience? According to your ratings and reviews, you like wines in the moderately sweet range. It appears you are a reisling fan which is very food friendly and on the sweeter side. If you’re trying to educate moms that there is more than white zin out there, bravo! Hopefully, as you take your readers on your wine journey, your tastes will broaden.
