Who: Cupcake Wine
What: Sauvignon Blanc (13% abv)
When: 2010
Where: Marlborough, New Zealand
Why: Hello? Cupcake (cake + frosting). You don’t need to ask “why?” ‘Nuff said.
How:
My son had been away for 6 weeks. I know he’s a big college boy now and can take care of himself, but dang it, I miss that kid when he’s gone. (I also miss his 6’3” height that keeps me off kitchen stools when the upper cabinets need to be reached.) This particular stretch of time involved some very busy and rather amazing weeks in Mexico with a small Spanish class. And yes, there was a bit of jealousy on my part at play here too. Let’s face it, there are times when I’d take three nights in a tent in the back yard, much less three weeks in a foreign country. But all jealousy aside, I was thrilled for him, and even more thrilled for me as I hugged him upon his arrival back in the USA.
And then it was off to the patio to hear about the wonderful trip (and open some spectacular presents). I was armed with two bottles of Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc. Cupcake makes an entire line of wines that hail from all over the world. Their Sauvignon Blanc comes to us from that wonder of all Sauvignon Blanc regions: Marlborough, New Zealand.
One sniff of this wine will have you checking to make sure that someone didn’t slip a slice of lemon meringue pie into your glass. I checked, it was just wine, so I continued on sipping. Ahhh… that lovely, refreshing acidity in my mouth. The lemons were joined by their friends the limes, as well as some other tart berries (cranberry was there, I know it was). It finished tart and juicy and lingered on in my mouth until the next wave came through. (By wave I mean mouthful.)
This was oh so good with grilled chicken, steak and vegetable kabobs and a big old garden salad. But, it would be absolutely amazing with my new culinary obsession, lobster macaroni and cheese. The wine’s tartness contrasting with the creaminess of the mac and cheese would be remarkable! Up until now I haven’t yet attempted to master a home cooked version of this dish, but I am planning on trying it soon. And I will make sure I have some Cupcake in my glass. And maybe some cupcakes on the dessert plates, too! (butter cream frosting, please!)
